Metabolism is the process by which your body converts what you eat and drink into energy. Inside our body, we have millions of small energy factories called mitochondria in our cells. Even when you're at rest, your body needs energy for functions such as breathing, circulating blood and repairing cells. This is where our mitochondria come in. These little powerhouses provide the fuel for our body so it can perform its daily functions. We need the mitochondria to be able to burn fuel efficiently in order to burn calories and if they are underpowered then our metabolism will not be firing on all cylinders.
What may affect our metabolism?
Genetics: As we know if you look at family’s, skinny parents tend to have skinny kids and vice versa. Also, if your family has a history of type 2 diabetes, research has shown that your mitochondria may be up to 50% less effective at burning calories than the average person, even if you are thin.
Age: As we age our muscle mass naturally decreases, which slows down the rate we burn calories.
Size: Did you know that on the wholelarger people have faster metabolic rates? This is because it takes more energy to fuel a larger body than a smaller one.
Sex: Men tend to have more muscle mass than women hence the capacity to burn more calories.

Take a look at your diet. If you are eating eat lots of sugar, processed foodsor in fact just too much food, you are overburdening and damaging your mitochondria which means they won’t work to their optimum output. Focus on food quality protein (e.g. poultry, nuts, eggs, fish), slow releasing carbohydrates (e.g. pumpkin, sweet potatoes, brown rice) and get some healthy fats (e.g. oily fish, eggs, nuts and seeds) in which mitochondria love as fuel.
Sleep. Scientific research has shownthat our sleep may have a large impact on our metabolic rate. Insufficient sleep exacerbates inflammation, increases heart disease risk and hinders our immune, brain and cellular performance. Tired? If you need any more good reasons to get an early night, studies have also shown that. By just having 1 hours less sleep a night we may overeat by 200 kcal the following day.
Increase your activity level. More and faster! High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and strength training have shown to be very beneficial for our mitochondria. Strength training builds muscle and creates more mitochondria, and HIIT training improves mitochondrial function which means you burn more calories!
