Do I really need a Multivitamin/ mineral complex, can’t I get everything from my diet?’
We often get asked this question and many people are very sceptical about the need to take a comprehensive multi-nutrient supplement. We are fully in favour of food first but even if diet is addressed it still may not be enough and supplementation can be a particularly powerful adjunct to supporting overall health. There are a number of reasons why we think this.
Vitamin and Mineral Shortfalls
Unfortunately the vast majority of people are low in many vitamins and minerals. For many this is largely due to a diet of processed foods and ready meals. But even those people who consume a “whole food” diet with plenty of plant based foods may also be at risk due to large scale modern day agriculture which has vastly depleted soils of nutrients and minerals. This is especially so if we are consuming non-organic foods, which to be honest many of us can’t afford to eat on a daily basis. The nutrients which are most commonly in shortage for the majority of individuals are:
Very few vitamins and minerals act in isolation
Rather they act synergistically to support many body systems and should be taken as a complex for maximum benefit.
Even if you are eating a fantastic diet, if your digestive health is not optimal then it is highly likely you may not be absorbing the nutrients you have eaten. Adequate levels of stomach acid and digestive enzymes need to be secreted in order for us to break down our food and extricate the nutrients from it. For example if you have low levels of stomach acid (which can happen due to stress, medication use and ageing) your ability to absorb Vitamin B12 and zinc will be greatly impaired. Digestive health is a common complaint, especially as we age.
It is hard to find someone nowadays who doesn’t confess to having stress in their life on a daily basis.Stress is hard work for our bodies, particularly our adrenal glands who require a number of nutrients to mount a stress response and very often in cases of chronic stress they are using these up faster than we can replenish them
Not all Multivitamin/mineral supplements are created equal
As with everything quality is crucial. Picking a carefully formulated supplement, with therapeutic doses and active nutrients will have a much bigger impact on your wellbeing than a commercial multivitamin from the local supermarket or chemist.
A comprehensive multivitamin is a great and effective way of ensuring you are getting everything you need. They are a safety net for when our diet cannot quite match up to our lifestyle and overall requirements.
